James Gunn would “bend over backwards” to bring Margot Robbie back as Harley Quinn in the DCU

When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, they singled out a few select characters from the DCEU who could make the leap to the DCU. Viola Davis has returned as Amanda Waller, as well as John Cena as Peacemaker, Steve Agee as John Economos, Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle, and more. But there’s one more character who Gunn would like to bring into the DCU, and that’s Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Harley Quinn in the DCU?

In the clip from The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? podcast, Gunn said Harley Quinn is “actually one of the more difficult things in this to justify as being canon in the DCU.” He pointed out that the relationship between Harley and the Joker is very specific, and the Clown Prince of Crime hasn’t yet been established in the DCU.

Gunn said he will be bringing Harley Quinn into the DCU at some point, and if Margot Robbie is still keen on playing the role… the door is wide open.

“Margot Robbie is one of my favourite actors to work with. She is so good in the movie. I love her as Harley,” he said. “I don’t know where Margot’s head is with all of this. Harley is a character I’m almost certainly going to use in the DCU, and if Margot wants to play her, then I’ll bend over backwards to explain that in the world. But if she doesn’t, then I might go with somebody else, where I don’t have to be attached to what happens to Harley in this movie.“

Others may disagree, but I’ve always felt that a clean slate for the DCU would have been preferable to what they’ve done. Bringing certain actors back and recasting others just feels confusing for the general public, and there’s a sense of, “well, if this person gets to come back, why not this one?”

Man of Tomorrow

Next up for the DCU is Man of Tomorrow, which will see Superman and Luthor forced to team up to face a greater threat: the superintelligent Brainiac.

David Corenswet is back as Superman alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Lars Eidinger is set to play Brainiac, which I’m pretty excited about, and Lanterns star Aaron Pierre will make an appearance as John Stewart. Also returning are Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Adria Arjona is also part of the cast and is believed to be playing Maxima, but that hasn’t been confirmed, and many fans think it’s a misdirect and she’s actually playing Wonder Woman. Milly Alcock will also be returning as Supergirl. The film is set to be released on July 9, 2027.

Do you want Margot Robbie to play Harley Quinn in the DCU, or should a new actor play the role?
