One of this year’s most inspiring, emotionally charged, and thought-provoking animated films, In Waves, has a new trailer, and it’s only a brief glimpse of the film’s perfection and purity of heart and soul. The film, directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen, debuts on Netflix on November 27, and it’s not to be missed.

“A Perfect Film, Full Stop”
Based on a true story told in AJ Dungo’s 2019 graphic novel of the same name, In Waves is an emotional roller coaster that demands to be seen by everyone. In my review of the film, I described it as not only a perfect film, but also one of the best I’d ever seen, full stop. I say this with my whole chest. No reservations, no imagined payoffs from Netflix. From one cinephile to another, and someone who adores animation in all forms, this movie nails every aspect of its production flawlessly.
In my review, I wrote, “Before I left for my walk, I hugged my wife like it was the only thing I was put on this Earth to do. I’ve gotten sentimental as I’ve aged, and after seeing something as thought-provoking and inspirational as In Waves, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe at the way Nguyen translated Dungo’s vision to the silver screen.”
Continuing, “It’s been hours since I finished watching In Waves, and I’m still feeling the aftershocks. I feel like a tornado of emotions, knowing that I’ve seen what I would consider a perfect animated film. I surfed my first wave during a perfect storm of story, sound, and the feeling you get when you’re grateful for what you have in this wicked world. I urge you to open your heart to this movie and feel every gorgeous and terrible emotion it unleashes inside you.”
