Martin Scorsese almost directed Angelina Jolie’s Cleopatra movie but Seth Rogen ruined everything

Once upon a time, Martin Scorsese was slated to direct a Cleopatra movie starring Angelina Jolie…but Seth Rogen ruined everything. Typical.

How Did Seth Rogen Ruin Cleopatra?

During a conversation with his daughter, Francesca, in Tribeca’s new video series Crafty, Scorsese mentioned that he had come very close to directing a Cleopatra movie starring Angelina Jolie.

“We were gonna do Cleopatra at one point, and then they made fun of [Kim Jong Un], and he got mad and blew up everybody at Columbia,” he said. “Seth Rogen, right? And then he got mad, and [it] ruined Cleopatra.“

In 2014, Seth Rogen starred in The Interview (which he also co-directed and co-wrote). The film involved a fictional mission to assassinate Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea. Well, the North Korean government wasn’t too pleased when it found out about the film and threatened action against the United States if it was released. And later, there was a massive hack of Sony Pictures that leaked internal e-mails, employee records, and more.

Among the many e-mails revealed was a private exchange between Cleopatra producer Scott Rudin and then-Sony co-chair Amy Pascal in which Rudin called Jolie a “minimally talented spoiled brat.” Not too nice.

Scorsese continued, “We were going to do it. Eric Roth was ready on the script. Angelina Jolie was Cleopatra VII. It was gonna be really wild.“

Francesca said, “Seth, you ruined Cleopatra! I’m so mad about it.”

Scorsese responded, “Well, tell Seth, because they ruined everything. Just because Kim Jong Un doesn’t have a sense of humour.“

What Happens at Night

Scorsese is currently in post-production on What Happens at Night, a psychological horror film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen, and Jared Harris.

The film is a “dream-like story of a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. They check into a cavernous, largely deserted hotel where they encounter an enigmatic cast of characters including a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman and a charismatic faith healer. Nothing is quite as it seems in this strange, frozen world. As the couple struggle to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about themselves and the life they’ve built together.“

There’s no release date yet, but the film is expected to be released by Apple Original Films sometime next year.
