Masters of the Universe: You Can Now Own Amazon’s Underrated Reboot

It’s always such a bummer when a good movie comes out and doesn’t get the audience it deserves. Such was definitely the case with Amazon/MGM’s Masters of the Universe. Despite pretty good reviews and solid word-of-mouth (we loved it here on the site), it struggled at the box office, only grossing $64 million domestically and another $48 million overseas, meaning it topped out at just over $113 million worldwide. Considering the large budget, this was a pretty poor result, but unlike a lot of other movies that came out this year, theatrical was only part of the plan, with the movie having always been designed for an eventual run on Amazon Prime Video as an Original.

But one question a lot of us had was whether or not we’d actually be able to buy copies of the film, with streamers often consigning movies to streaming and never giving them independent releases. Amazon is better at this than many other streamers, but even they aren’t perfect, with movies like Saltburn, Nickel Boys, and their Road House remake never getting physical media releases. Luckily, Masters of the Universe is getting an actual 4K Blu-ray release, with it now available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD (order it HERE).

Sadly, the special features selection is a bit weak, with just a behind-the-scenes promotional gallery, a featurette, and the trailers. Still, at least it’s available at all in 4K.

Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam, who, after fifteen years stranded on Earth, is called back to Eternia to do battle with Skeletor (hilariously played by Jared Leto). Camila Mendes co-stars as Teela, while Idris Elba is Man-at-Arms. Again, I had a whale of a time with this movie in theaters, and director Travis Knight (who has another buzzy movie, Wildwood, coming out this week) did a great job paying homage to the classic cartoon and action figures while also making a movie that worked for modern audiences.
