After seemingly confirming his involvement in the next season of True Detective last week, it’s finally official. Nicolas Cage will star in True Detective season 5, and he’ll be joined by Antonio Banderas. I’m looking forward to this one.
Who Will They Play?
Plot details for the new season are being kept under wraps, but Cage will play Henry Logan, who was previously described as a New York detective tackling the mystery at the heart of the new season, and Banderas will play Rai Garcia.
Cage Teased His Involvement at NYCC
While making an appearance at New York Comic-Con last week, Cage pretty much confirmed he’d be starring in True Detective season 5.
“Because you can only do so many movies back to back to act, and necessity is the mother of invention, you can connect those dots too,” said Cage of his relentless schedule. “What do I mean by necessity? Feed the family, and don’t do too many movies back to back to back. So I think I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right?“
Issa López Is Back
Issa López, the showrunner/writer/director of True Detective: Night Country, is returning for the fifth season. Details are sparse, but HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, Francesca Orsi, said the new season will be “set in New York, in Jamaica Bay. Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
Could Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey Return?
The first season of True Detective isn’t just great TV, it’s one of the best damn things ever put on the small screen. The grim, hypnotic story of Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) was unforgettable, a lightning-in-a-bottle moment that the later seasons never quite captured. Last year, True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto teased that he had an idea to bring the duo back for another mystery.
McConaughey had said he would consider another season if it was good enough, but Harrelson shot that down in a separate interview. “Matthew’s so funny,” Harrelson responded. “But in fairness, never. Not a chance.“
Harrelson explained his reasons for not wanting to return aren’t because he didn’t love working on the show, but all to do with the risk of ruining it. “Because it turned out great,” he said. “I love that it turned out the way it did. If anything, doing another season would, I think, tarnish that.“
