I’ve been doing a lot of writing about who is likely going to play James Bond over the last few days. I’ll admit that I’m unenthusiastic about the choices so far, with a couple of the front-runners seeming a little too dull for my tastes. Still, as I mentioned in my Daniel Craig James Bond rankings, no one thought too much about his prospects in the role at the time, with everyone labeling him “James Blond.” Time proved us wrong, and the same thing can happen again.
Of course, one of the things upsetting Bond fans is the fact that Barbara Broccoli and EON are no longer involved, with them being the longtime stewards of the franchise who kept anything lame from happening. Were it left to the studios, we would have been flooded with James Bond spin-offs, which arguably would have killed the series, as its strength is its scarcity. There shouldn’t be more than one James Bond movie every two or three years, and the peripheral characters, such as Q, M, and Miss Moneypenny, should stay in that zone. James Bond isn’t the MCU. Look what happened to Star Wars, and how new movies and series in the franchise are being met with a shrug nowadays. That could have happened to 007.
At any rate, for our poll, I opted to include the presumed front-runners (Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, and Josh O’Connor), as well as a few guys who are apparently out of contention (Jack O’Connell and Jacob Elordi), and even some long shots like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Henry Cavill (who almost played Bond twenty years ago), and Richard Madden.
