Timothy Olyphant’s “Excessively Violent” Thriller Is Killing It On HBO Max At The Perfect Time

Timothy Olyphant’s violent R-rated thriller is seeing a major global resurgence right now thanks to HBO Max. He has starred in several thrillers over the years, including Gone in 60 Seconds, A Man Apart, Live Free or Die Hard, Snowden and Amsterdam. Olyphant has explored the genre on the small screen in Damages and Fargo, among others.

The actor also appeared in the 2009 film A Perfect Getaway with Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich, Kiele Sanchez, Marley Shelton and Chris Hemsworth. The thriller centers around three couples in Hawaii whose relaxing vacations are ruined when they discover that tourists are being murdered on the island in horrific ways. With serial killers on the loose, they attempt to investigate the truth behind the horrors all around them.

Olyphant’s A Perfect Getaway Is Back As An HBO Max Global Hit

Back in 2009, A Perfect Getaway earned $22.9 million at the box office and received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, who gave the movie a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes. This was David Twohy’s first feature-length project since 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick; the filmmaker, who directed and wrote the screenplay for A Perfect Getaway, has also worked on The Fugitive, The Arrival, G.I. Jane and Below.

It’s been 17 years, and now A Perfect Getaway is killing it on HBO Max’s global streaming chart, where it’s sitting at No. 10, as of October 19, 2026, behind Evil Dead Burn, Contagion, Superbad, Sundays, Speak No Evil, Hunter Hunter, V for Vendetta, Play Dirty and Uncharted. The film, which is rated R for graphic violence, language and drug use, is charting in countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Uruguay, but it’s not streaming on any platform in the United States.

The Gritty Thriller’s Resurgence Comes At The Perfect Time

A Perfect Getaway is seeing a resurgence at the perfect time. There are less than two weeks until Halloween, and October is the month when horror, thriller and spooky films start performing really well on streaming platforms. Then there’s the fact that Olyphant is weeks away from starring in brand-new content on both the big and small screens, so his fans might be revisiting his previous movies and shows.

Olyphant’s Apple TV comedy Stick is returning for its second season on November 4, and he’ll be reprising his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood character, James Stacy, in David Fincher’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, which will be released in IMAX theaters on November 25 before arriving on Netflix on December 23. Until those projects are released, fans can revisit Olyphant’s past work, including A Perfect Getaway on HBO Max.
