Inde Navarrette is giving X-Men fans a very early tease at her take on Rogue.
At D23 earlier this year, Marvel officially announced the Obsession star joined the cast of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot. During a carpet interview with Canadian news program Etalk, the reporter told Navarrette fans were “dying to hear your Southern accent,” and asked the actress if she could give a sneak peak at Rogue’s iconic catchphrase “sugar.”
“Oh!” Navarrette said with a smile. “You know what? God bless me, I haven’t done a lot of practice. But, ah! I mean, my version’s just, ‘Sugar,’” she said while delivering the line. “But I think that, you know, I’m gonna work on it, if you don’t like it, and I’m gonna figure out and talk to the Marvel team on what we wanna do.”
In the Marvel Comics, Rogue’s real name is Anna Marie, and she is originally from Mississippi. Her powers include the ability to temporarily absorb others’ powers and memories, per Marvel.
The new X-Men film is the first project Navarrette attached herself to after skyrocketing to fame this summer following the rise of Obsession. She joins the cast with Sadie Sink (Jean Grey), Kit Connor (Cyclops), Christopher Abbott (Prof. X), Samara Weaving (Emma Frost), Inde Navarrette (Rogue), Maya Boyd (Storm), Asa Germann (Angel) and Adam Driver (Mr. Sinister).
Jake Schreier will direct the movie that releases on May 5, 2028.
Of signing on to portray the character of Rogue for the MCU’s X-Men, Navarrette said on a recent episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast that she’s looking forward to taking on the new persona.
She said, “I also recognize that with acting comes the freedom of being a completely different person, one of those people being Rogue, Anna Marie… paying homage, paying respect to the incredible writers that are a part of Marvel, with Jake Schreier directing, taking what they want to do, adding my own sauce, and then going from there!”
Outside of her ties to Marvel, the actress will next star in Apple Original Films’ sci-fi thriller The Waffle House Index, which she will also executive produce.
