‘Game First, Then Movie’: Ed Boon Responds to Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat Crossover Pitch

For millions of fighting game fans around the world, Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat has been the dream match-up since the 90s.

And actor Noah Centineo, who plays Ken in Paramount’s latest live action Street Fighter movie, says he’d love to see some kind of crossover on the big screen.

He told IGN, when asked about the prospect of a crossover with Warner Bros’ Karl Urban-led film:

“Here’s what I want – I want more Street Fighter. If you bring an opportunity to us to be able to come back and reup these incredible characters, I’m down, and I know we’re all down.”

Ryu actor Andrew Koji added: “Hell yeah, that’d be sick!”

Replying to the quotes on social media, series creator Ed Boon said simply: “Game first, then movie.” He added a little winking emoji at the end.

Boon, who’s a huge Street Fighter fan, has been trying to get Capcom’s franchise to collide with Mortal Kombat for decades.

Ex-producer Yoshinori Ono confirmed in a 2019 interview that the Mortal Kombat devs had tried to get a Street Fighter guest character, but its requests were ultimately blocked by the Japanese publisher.

Street Fighter has loaned out its iconic cast to other fighting game franchises in the past, like Tekken and Fatal Fury, but it appears Mortal Kombat’s grotesque violence is the hold-up here.

I hope it does one day happen, though, because I think this would be a dream come true for the fighting game community.

Scorpion vs Ryu! Kitana vs Chun Li! M. Bison vs Shao Khan! The mind boggles at the possibilities!
