I Built the PS1 LEGO Set, and Nearly Lost My Mind

PlayStation recently sent me the PS1 LEGO set, which is made up of a whopping 1,911 pieces. I’ve never actually built a large LEGO set before; in fact, the last time I dabbled in LEGO was probably making some rubbish house in primary school, 20-something years ago.

This LEGO set faithfully recreates the 1994 console, with a full analogue stick-less controller and a working lid that reveals two sliding dioramas of Ape Escape and Gran Turismo.

As a finished product, I can appreciate the meticulous attention to detail, with working hinges and LEGO pieces reworked to replicate controller ports or even the power port at the back. This thing will look great on any shelf.

The issue, for me at least, is that it turns out I hate making LEGO. This set took me upwards of seven hours to complete, with a thick instruction manual that was filled with 422 detailed steps.

I understand the appeal: a thorough and slow-paced process where seemingly scattered bits of LEGO gradually begin to click into place, revealing a detailed ornament that you made. The thing is, it’s just not for me. My back hurts from leaning over my desk, my fingers are too stubby for some of the tiny little LEGOs, and I just don’t have the patience.
