Serious Burn Risk Prompts Recall of Almost 6 Million Bodum French Press Coffee Makers

The coffee and tea accessory company Bodum has recalled 5.9 million French presses because the inner glass carafes may pose a risk of serious burns. The carafes can break unexpectedly if they are damaged or cracked, including when a metal spoon is used to stir the coffee, according to a recall posted on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website.

Bodum has received reports of at least 70 instances of glass carafes breaking, and 48 instances of people being burned. The company said people with these French presses should immediately stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafes.

The company is offering a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label for the glass carafe to consumers who register their coffee maker online.

Which French Presses Were Recalled?

Bodum recalled the following models of 8-cup and 12-cup French presses with replaceable glass carafes:

  • Bistro
  • Brazil
  • Caffettiera
  • Chambord
  • Crema
  • Java
  • Jesper
  • Kenya
