Recognize Early Signs of Chronic Kidney Disease

Normal urine should have a clear or pale yellow appearance. Foamy urine, though, could indicate chronic kidney disease.

“Foamy urine can be a sign that there’s a great deal of protein leaking out into the urine,” says Dr. Weiner, which may mean your kidneys aren’t filtering the way they’re supposed to filter. But, he adds, “Most of the time, when people think their urine is foamy, it really isn’t.”

After you urinate, it’s normal to notice bubbles in the toilet, which then disappear once you flush. But if a white, frothy foam lingers after flushing, it’s important to tell your doctor.

A simple laboratory test can measure the amount of protein in the urine and determine if chronic kidney disease is the culprit, says Weiner.
