After a premiere was held in California four days earlier, The Devil’s Advocate was widely released in the United States and Canada on October 17, 1997. The movie would go on to be a solid hit for Warner Bros., bringing in $152.9 million on an estimated $57 million budget, according to IMDb. Since then, the film has often been celebrated, like when Collider ranked it among the “Best Keanu Reeves Movies” in September 2020.

The Devil’s Advocate brought together an impressive cast that included Reeves, Al Pacino, Charlize Theron, Craig T. Nelson, Connie Nielsen, and Delroy Lindo, among others. The supernatural horror film focused on a young hotshot lawyer who gets recruited to a New York law firm with a charismatic and unsettling boss who takes an unusual interest in him. Since its release, it has been embraced by many viewers, which is why it has a solid 80% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes based on user ratings.

Keanu Reeves Called ‘The Devil’s Advocate’ One of His ‘Favorite’ Movies He Starred In

In March 2023, Keanu Reeves was promoting John Wick: Chapter 4 when he took part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session through the Lionsgate account. During the back-and-forth with fans of his work, the beloved actor was asked a simple and compelling question: “What is your favourite film that you’ve worked on?”

During Reeves’ career, he has starred in several legendary movies that have left a huge mark on pop culture history. As a result, many of his biggest fans would struggle to name their favorite film he headlined. Funnily enough, the actor’s response to the Reddit question proved he didn’t have a straightforward answer either. Instead, he named several of his classic films, including The Devil’s Advocate.

“Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!! F**k, aaaaaahhhhhhhhh…I’ve been very fortunate to work on a few films that have changed my life. I can’t pick just one. But here are a few- River’s Edge, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Matrix trilogy, The Devil’s Advocate, A Scanner Darkly, My Own Private Idaho, Point Break, John Wick.”

Reeves naming The Devil’s Advocate as one of his favorite films he made is especially meaningful given the list of his movies that didn’t make the cut. He notably didn’t include popular films like Speed, Constantine, Parenthood, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, or any of the John Wick sequels.
