Mercedes’ New 577-HP AMG SUV Has a Surprising Second Personality

A Mercedes-AMG SUV with 577 horsepower and a 4.1-second sprint to 60 mph sounds like the sort of machine that would burn through premium gasoline without a second thought. But the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid has another side: It can run on electricity alone for everyday driving, then unleash its turbocharged six-cylinder engine and electric motor when you want the full AMG experience. After driving both the SUV and Coupe in Colorado, I found a performance crossover that balances serious speed with a surprisingly practical plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The redesigned powertrain pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with a 181-horsepower electric motor, producing a combined 577 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes-AMG estimates a 0–60 mph time of just 4.1 seconds—eight-tenths quicker than the outgoing GLE 53. Both body styles also offer electric-only driving at speeds up to 87 mph, along with dedicated modes that let drivers save battery power for city streets. It’s a very different kind of AMG, although anyone craving the thunderous soundtrack of the brand’s V8 models may still find something missing.

2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid: Powertrain and Electric Range

Mercedes-AMG reworked its six-cylinder GLE for both SUV and Coupe buyers, pairing an upgraded 3-liter inline-six turbo with a 181-horsepower electric motor. Combined output is 577 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes-AMG estimates a 0–60 mph time of 4.1 seconds, down 0.8 seconds from the outgoing GLE 53. More importantly, the new AMG can cover ground on electricity alone at speeds up to 87 mph thanks to its 400-volt plug-in hybrid system.

The six-cylinder GLE 53 isn’t built under AMG’s “One Man, One Engine” philosophy. That honor is reserved for the revised 4-liter biturbo V8 in the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S SUV and Coupe, which is still assembled by hand in Affalterbach.

A 9.6-kW onboard charger comes standard for typical Level 2 AC charging of the lithium-ion battery. Expect most of that energy replenishment to happen in your garage. DC fast charging restores 10–80 percent of the battery in just 20 minutes, and AC charging takes 2.75 hours to recharge from 10–100 percent.

Two dedicated programs manage the battery’s efficiency:

  • Electric: Your AMG 53 will ride on electric energy at speeds up to 87 mph. When you press the accelerator hard, the gas engine kicks in because it senses your demand for full power. When the battery runs low, the system automatically shifts to Comfort mode.
  • Battery Hold: This feature blends both power sources, with the electric motor providing up to about a 25% boost while holding the current state of charge. This allows drivers to save their electric miles for the city later in the trip.

The GLE can also cruise about 45 miles around town on electric power. Theoretically, you could go weeks without using any gasoline if your daily journeys are short and you recharge regularly. That’s huge when premium fuel prices are high.

How the 577-HP AMG GLE 53 Hybrid Drives

With this smaller AMG power unit, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid is quick and gets off the line fast, but it still lacks the definitive grizzly sound I am accustomed to. Again, the GLE 63 paints a different story in this category. Interestingly, Mercedes-AMG engineered an all-electric GT 4-Door Coupe with IndyCar-like performance and a digital recreation of its menacing V8 soundtrack. The EV is an electric force of nature. The brand didn’t go that far with the GLE variant, but this SUV’s technology is still otherworldly.

The two electric programs join the familiar AMG Dynamic Select modes: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Trail, and Individual. Each adjusts throttle and shift response, steering, damping, chassis feel, and exhaust sound. Sport+ was by far the most engaging mode. Importantly, this Mercedes-AMG setting doesn’t automatically switch off traction control, which is reassuring for precision driving.

The turbocharger runs 21.8 psi of boost, pushing higher engine revs and holding torque deeper into the rpm range. The electric motor adds 181 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, filling the low-rpm gap before the turbo builds boost. Power flows through the intelligent, fast-shifting AMG SpeedShift TCT 9G transmission to the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ AWD system, with fully variable torque distribution. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The breathtaking Launch Control is new to this AMG and simple to engage. It catapults the SUV from a standstill, as my drive partner, Howard Walker, found out when I demonstrated the race feature. Paired with AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with adaptive damping, the vehicle’s poise at higher speeds and in aggressive cornering is incredible. The optional AMG high-performance composite braking system handled abrupt slowdowns from high speeds. But expect more brake dust with this upgrade.

These game-day AMG GLE performers are well-built, energetic, and digitally savvy. For the 2027 models, AMG patrons can expect the latest enhancements in artificial intelligence, aerodynamics, engine optimization with electric power boosts, and advanced systems that make you wonder who’s in control: you or your AMG.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid SUV vs. Coupe: What’s Different?

One point of contention to note is the AMG exterior design philosophy versus the interior ethos. Modern AMGs aren’t as menacing as they used to be, but the cockpits are keenly AMG-focused. Though the GLE’s physique is a bit subdued, the refresh gives it a sharper face and edgier creases.

Up front, a revised AMG-specific grille features vertical struts, new air intakes, and updated LED lighting. The GLE’s rear received a revised bumper and new taillights with embedded three-pointed-star graphics. Manufaktur Cirrus Silver Magno (a matte silver) is offered for the first time as an AMG series finish on the GLE. The Manufaktur program also offers Patagonia Red Metallic and AMG Carbon Fiber trim.

For more visual excitement, choose the GLE 53 Hybrid Coupe. The bubbled silhouette stands tall on new AMG wheel styles (up to 22 inches) and is complemented by contrasting black side mirrors, illuminated running boards, and an illuminated AMG radiator grille that hosts the large Mercedes-Benz insignia.

At the rear, circular quad exhaust tips flow from the AMG Performance Exhaust System. Moreover, the GLE 53 Hybrid Coupe’s sporty appeal makes you want to take on more spirited activities.

Inside the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid

Inside, the anointed interior reigns supreme. Occupants will experience the blend of digital tech and fine materials like Manufaktur Nappa leather in Truffle Brown, Carmine Red, and Yacht Blue. AMG trim pieces and an optional microfiber headliner are also available.

The race-inspired, flat-bottom AMG steering wheel is enhanced by new tactile roller and rocker controls, large shift paddles, and two standard AMG DRIVE UNIT satellite buttons with color LCDs for drive modes and program settings. The steering wheel is available in leather, carbon fiber, or microfiber.

Mercedes-AMG vehicles use fourth-generation MBUX infotainment powered by MB.OS, Mercedes-Benz’s in-house operating system, with AMG-specific views such as a large tachometer screen and performance data. The Burmester 3D surround sound system (15 speakers, 710 watts) is amazing and standard on all AMGs. You can customize it by selecting settings like Intense and Pure depending on your mood. The cabin also offers a Digital Vehicle Key, MBUX Entertainment, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic roof, and heated and ventilated power front seats.

Upgraded packages to comfort passengers further include the Pinnacle Trim, which adds four-zone automatic climate control, Magic Vision Control, Air Balance Cabin Fragrance System, and temperature-controlled front cupholders. The Rear Seat Package (SUV only) includes power rear-side window sunshades, heated rear seats, power second-row seats, and luxury rear head restraints.

2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid: Price and Verdict

All in all, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Hybrid is well-balanced, innovatively distinguished, and super intelligent. It’s your choice for efficiency; however, upgrade to the 63 if you want all-out power!
