24 Years Ago Today, Arkane Studios Released One of the Greatest Stealth Video Games Ever Made

In the modern video game era, Arkane Studios is probably best known for the mostly well-received Deathloop and the extremely controversial Redfall. It’s been a few years since Arkane released a game, and with its next game, Marvel’s Blade, nowhere in sight, the future of Arkane appears uncertain. However, at the same time, Arkane is also celebrating the anniversary of one of its greatest achievements.

Today, October 29, 2026, marks the 24th anniversary of the release of Dishonored. Dishonored is a first-person stealth action RPG. Players control Corvo Attano, an Empress’s bodyguard, after he is framed for murder and is forced to become an assassin.

Dishonored allowed a level of gameplay freedom that was almost unparalleled in the early 2010s. Players could complete the entire game without killing a single enemy, choose to assassinate enemies silently, or forgo all of that and play much more violently. Missions and objectives can also dynamically change based on player decisions.

According to Metacritic, Dishonored sits at an impressive 88 Metascore. Critics widely praised the game’s level of gameplay freedom, scope, art direction, combat, and memorable characters. The game’s narrative received some criticism, with some reviewers feeling the individual short stories within missions were better than the overarching narrative.

Since its release, Dishonored has had two story expansions, as well as a full sequel. Dishonored 2 was released in 2016, with its story expansion released in 2017. Both Dishonored games were remastered for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and are available to play on most modern consoles and PC.

Arkane’s next game, Deathloop, would also be set in the same universe as the Dishonored games.

Unfortunately for fans, there does not appear to be a new Dishonored game in the near future. Arkane would develop Redfall after Deathloop; Redfall was widely panned by critics and fans, and there have been virtually no updates on Marvel’s Blade since its initial announcement.

Reportedly, Arkane also experienced a significant number of layoffs in June this year.
