Earlier Tuesday afternoon the Seattle Seahawks bolstered their roster with a notable trade.
Seattle acquired three-time All-Pro offensive lineman Quenton Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts, who appear to be in the midst of a fire sale. Earlier this month the team fired longtime general manager Chris Ballard, a sign that wholesale changes were coming.
Those changes appear to be the first of many the organization has planned ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline. On Tuesday afternoon, just a few hours after dealing Nelson to the Seahawks for third and fifth-round picks, the Colts shipped off star defensive lineman DeForest Buckner.
San Fransisco 49ers Reunite With DeForest Buckner
The 49ers drafted Buckner with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft and he became a star for the team, making the Pro Bowl in 2018 and finishing as a Second-Team All-Pro selection in his final season with the team.
San Francisco then traded the star defensive lineman to the Colts for the team’s first round pick in 2020, which the 49ers then traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a move back that saw the team acquire Javon Kinlaw. While that selection didn’t ultimately pan out, the 49ers will welcome back Buckner as the team parts with a fourth-round pick.

Buckner is off to a hot start this season with four sacks through the first seven games – which ties the mark he hit during the entire 2025 season. He also has three passes defended and a fumble recovery as one of the lone bright spots on a struggling Colts team.
Now he joins a 49ers team that suffered its first loss of the season in a Week 7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
San Francisco is on bye this week, giving Buckner an extra week to prepare for his first game back with his old team.
