Why We Love This Deal

REI is in full-on jacket mode. The retailer just unveiled hundreds of new jackets from brands like Stio, Columbia, and even Nike’s ACG line. But getting a decent jacket at REI doesn’t mean having to pay full price—if you wander into the site’s Deals section, you’ll find many styles from last year, including over a dozen from Arc’teryx that are up to 40% off.

One of them is the Arc’teryx Squamish Hoody, which is currently selling for $120, a 40% discount from its normal price of $200. That beats the prices anywhere else, including Zappos and direct from Arc’teryx. REI has three colorways on sale with most sizes in stock (for now), which is rare for an Arc’teryx product—if the brand’s gear is on sale at all, it’s usually only available in one or two sizes.

What Shoppers Should Know

  • Fabric: 100% nylon
  • Water Resistance: DWR finish
  • Pockets: 1 zippered chest pocket
  • Weight: 5.3 ounces

The Squamish is a great example of what makes Arc’teryx so appealing (and why it has such a strong following). The brand didn’t invent the windbreaker, but this jacket shows how Arc’teryx perfected it. The nylon fabric wears a DWR finish, so it offers good wind resistance and will repel splashes and light rain. Amazingly, despite not containing any spandex, it’ll stretch with you as you move, and it’s notably lightweight. It also has a comfortable texture, which is rare for a windbreaker—most have a synthetic, plasticky feel. A single chest pocket gives you some secure storage for essentials. Some shoppers wished for more pockets, but I think they’re not necessary and would just add bulk to a streamlined jacket like this.

It’s easy to get lost in the sea of great outdoor jackets Arc’teryx makes, but use this as a rule of thumb: If you need an ultralight layer for trail running and high-intensity sports, go with the Norvan, which weighs in at a feathery 3.8 ounces. If you prefer a more robust softshell with UV protection, the Gamma should be your pick. Otherwise, the Squamish performs well for most situations, from casual wear to hiking, travel, and more.

What Shoppers Are Saying

Shoppers loved the Squamish’s “super light and packable” design, and one shopper even raved that it packs down to roughly the size of a napkin. That makes it an ideal EDC jacket or backup layer for backcountry hikes. Shoppers also appreciated its “surprisingly soft” fabric and called it “much more comfortable and breathable” than typical shell layers.

Arc’teryx deals are always blink-and-you’ll-miss-it opportunities because they sell out so fast. Don’t let that happen to you: Toss a Squamish Hoody in your cart and take advantage of this rare discount while you can.
