Ben Affleck’s New Thriller Holds No. 1 on Netflix for a Second Straight Week With 30.8 Million Views

Ben Affleck’s latest thriller is showing no signs of slowing down on Netflix.

Animals hit Netflix on Oct. 9, becoming an instant hit with 23.8 million views in just a matter of days. That number solidified it as the top English film on the streaming giant’s global chart for the week of Oct. 5 through 11. 30.8 million views has now kept it in the same spot for the second straight week.

The movie, produced, directed, and co-written by Affleck, revolves around a kidnapping. “When their son is kidnapped, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife find themselves drawn into a web of deception. As they scramble to raise the ransom payment, they’re forced to make choices–and reveal secrets–that could tear their world apart,” reads the official description.

In addition to his behind-the-scenes work, the Oscar winner took on the role of Mark Kimball, the mayoral hopeful, in Animals. He stars alongside Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Luis Gerardo Mendez, and Adriana Paz. Washington, known for Scandal, portrays Affleck’s on-screen wife, Abigail.

With its 30.8 million views, Animals eclipsed Tyler Perry’s Doing Life (7.3 million), the No. 2, more than four times over. Ice Age: Collision Course, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and the original Age Ice, released in 2002, rounded out the top five English movies on Netflix’s global list. Animals also maintained the No. 1 spot in the United States.

The crime thriller was produced in partnership with Artists Equity, a studio founded by Affleck, Matt Damon, and Gerry Cardinale. Its filming took place in and around the city of Los Angeles, staying true to its fictional backdrop.

The official numbers for Animals’ opening in select theaters are still unavailable.
