Christian Bale’s ‘Grim’ and ‘Unpleasant’ 2004 Film Has One of the ‘Greatest Psychological Thriller Opening Scenes’

Christian Bale’s The Machinist wastes little time unsettling viewers and drawing them in. In an October 17 ranking, Collider placed the 2004 film ninth among “The 10 Greatest Psychological Thriller Opening Scenes.”

However, that praise contrasts with a harsh review from the film’s original release. Writing for Salon in 2004, critic Stephanie Zacharek called Brad Anderson’s movie a “grim, unpleasant psychological horror thriller.”

What makes The Machinist’s opening so unsettling?

First, Bale’s Trevor Reznik wraps what appears to be a body in a rug. Then, he drives to the waterfront and struggles to get rid of it before a flashlight interrupts him.

Instead of explaining everything, the film moves back to events leading up to that moment. As a result, viewers enter Trevor’s life with a question hanging over him: what has he done?

Meanwhile, Collider connects the scene’s tension to another famous cleanup: Norman Bates hiding Marion Crane’s car in Psycho. Its assessment reads, “The film unsettles with its dark visuals and surreal atmosphere, which begins with its very first scene.”

Who does Christian Bale play in The Machinist?

Beyond that opening, Trevor works as a machine operator and says he has not slept in a year. Gradually, strange encounters and suspicion leave him unsure which parts of his world he can trust.

Additionally, Bale lost 63 pounds for the role, changing his appearance long before the mystery reveals its answers. Yet Zacharek argued that the physical change did not make the film work, showing how sharply reactions can differ.

Still, the new ranking focuses on the opening rather than declaring the whole movie a masterpiece. That distinction matters because a scene can build dread even when critics disagree about the story around it.

Finally, the mystery asks viewers to follow a man who cannot explain himself, even as the opening gives them reasons to distrust him.
