Exclusive Club: Joe Burrow Did Something the NFL Hasn’t Seen In 75 Years

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow became the second NFL quarterback in history to post an off-the-charts stat line in Sunday’s 43-36 overtime win over the Tennessee Titans at Paycor Stadium.

Despite a remarkable effort by Cam Ward and the winless Titans, the Bengals traded blow for blow to secure a third straight win. Burrow finished with 38 completions for 462 yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions, 10 rushing yards, and one rushing score in the victory.

According to ESPN Insights, Burrow became the first QB since Norm Van Brocklin in 1951 to finish a game with 450-plus passing yards, five passing touchdowns and a rushing score.

On Sept. 28, 1951, Van Brocklin threw for an NFL-record 554 yards in the Los Angeles Rams’ 54-14 win over the New York Yanks, per Pro Football Reference. Van Brocklin completed 27 pass attempts for five touchdowns and two picks in the record-setting day.

Burrow’s nine-yard rushing touchdown put the Bengals ahead in overtime. The Cincinnati defense forced a turnover on downs to secure the win, keeping pace with the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2).
