The last few Star Wars movies have not quite been the critical darlings that some of the classic films were, but the world’s biggest franchise has been having a moment in the video game world. From Galactic Racer to Zero Company to Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars games have been delivering consistent quality from a galaxy far, far, away, and that streak continues with a game made by fans, for fans: Fate of the Galaxy.
Fate of the Galaxy is a game meant to convey the feeling of starship dogfighting in outer space. A total conversion of the space simulation game FreeSpace, the game features three interconnected campaigns, a mission creator, arcade modes, and LAN multiplayer. Set during the original trilogy, the game was created by a team of volunteers and features all the iconic spaceships from Star Wars, including X-Wings, TIE Fighters, and more. The game allows players to fight for the Rebel Alliance, the Empire, or as an independent adventurer, with support for different controllers and joysticks, and a mission creator with shareable levels. Fate of the Galaxy is available for PC, Mac, and Linux on the game’s website.
Star Wars fans have had plenty to play in the last couple of months. Galactic Racer saw a return to pod-racing games, with exhilarating action and memorable cast of characters that saw the game unanimously praised by critics and audiences alike. In August, Zero Company took the world of the Clone Wars to the turn-based tactics genre, with strong strategic gameplay and gripping story that also earned it high scores. Though these games are great additions to the Star Wars canon, they’re perhaps not quite as impressive as this passion project that began all the way back in 2007; it’s been a long time coming, and fans can see if it was worth the wait at no cost.
