In 1944, Bacall was just 19 years old when she made her film debut alongside Bogart in To Have and Have Not, directed by Howard Hawks. Bogart, 44 at the time, was already one of Hollywood’s most famous actors. On set, their relationship developed into something more than professional. They fell in love, and in May 1945, got married.
It was here that the origin story of the unusual bracelet began, with a line from Bacall that became one of old Hollywood’s most memorable: “You do know how to whistle, don’t you Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.” The scene, a candid moment of trust between the two characters, was a standout in the film, and it was this line that inspired the idea for the bracelet.
