Why Isn’t Jalen Hurts Playing in Eagles-Panthers Game?

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to face off against the Carolina Panthers in a battle of teams looking for their third win of the season.

Carolina has been one of the surprises of the season with an offense scoring 30.3 points per game as quarterback Bryce Young continues to impress. On the opposite side of the coin is Philadelphia’s offense, which is scoring just 18.4 points per game – fourth-worst in the league.

The Eagles offense might have its work cut out for its once again as it takes the field without star quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Jalen Hurts Diagnosed With Blood Clot

Earlier this week the Eagles issued a statement revealing Hurts visited the training room after practice on Oct. 8, requesting treatment for his calf. He went on to practice in full and played in a Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, despite doctors finding a superficial blood clot the day before the game.

“Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter,” the team said in its statement.

However, on Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. That led the team to decide Hurts will be sidelined until the blood clot issue is resolved.

It’s been a rough season for Hurts, who is completing under 58% of his passes for just 933 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He’s added 107 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

With Hurts sidelined, Tanner McKee will get the start. In his third season with the Eagles, McKee has completed 61.4% of his passes for 597 yards with five touchdowns and just one interception.

The Eagles and Panthers kick off at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
