Near-Perfect 1991 Film Named the ‘Most Amazing Thriller Movie Ever Made’

If you’re looking for the perfect movie to watch this Halloween weekend, it would be hard to go wrong with a thriller that has spent more than three decades terrifying audiences.

The Silence of the Lambs, Jonathan Demme’s 1991 psychological thriller starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, was recently singled out by Collider as the “most amazing thriller movie ever made.” The film’s reputation is hardly a new development, but its near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes scores offer plenty of evidence for why it remains such an enduring Halloween watch.

The movie currently holds a 95% Tomatometer score from 161 critics and a 95% Popcornmeter score from more than 250,000 audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

That’s about as close to universal approval as a 35-year-old horror thriller can get.

‘The Silence of the Lambs’ Still Has a Terrifying Premise

The movie follows Clarice Starling, an FBI trainee played by Foster, who is tasked with interviewing Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and imprisoned serial killer portrayed by Hopkins.

Clarice is trying to understand another killer’s behavior and locate a missing woman, but getting information from Lecter comes with a price. The brilliant psychiatrist quickly realizes that he can manipulate Clarice by forcing her to reveal pieces of her own traumatic past.

The result is less of a conventional slasher movie and more of a psychological battle between two exceptionally intelligent characters.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the film as a taut thriller that balances psychological study with outright horror, specifically praising the performances from Foster and Hopkins.

It’s One of the Best Halloween Movies You Can Watch

While The Silence of the Lambs isn’t necessarily the first movie that comes to mind when people think of Halloween, that’s part of what makes it such a good choice.

There’s no supernatural monster or haunted house driving the story. Instead, Demme creates tension through conversations, manipulation, and the growing realization that Clarice is dealing with someone who is considerably more dangerous than he initially appears.

Lecter is also one of the most recognizable villains in movie history, thanks largely to Hopkins’ Oscar-winning performance. The movie itself won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Demme, Best Actress for Foster, Best Actor for Hopkins and Best Adapted Screenplay.

That makes it one of the rare horror-leaning movies to win Hollywood’s biggest prize.

Its 95% critics score is impressive enough, but the identical 95% audience score may be even more telling. More than 250,000 audience ratings have contributed to the Popcornmeter, meaning the movie isn’t simply surviving on the reputation it established in 1991.

And the praise hasn’t stopped with its original release. Recent audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes continue to describe it as a classic, with viewers praising the performances and its ability to hold up decades later.

So if Halloween weekend calls for something genuinely unsettling rather than another disposable horror movie, The Silence of the Lambs is an easy choice.
