New Study of 424 Adults Identifies the No. 1 In-Bed Habit That Vastly Improves Men’s Sex Lives

After conducting a study involving 424 adults, researchers have uncovered the No. 1 factor that determines how satisfying a man’s sexual experiences are. The results reveal a simple change that men can make to have more enjoyment in the bedroom.

The No. 1 Bedroom Habit Revealed

In January 2025, the National Library of Medicine indexed the results of a study that was conducted on what leads to peak sexual satisfaction in men and women. According to the study, which had 424 participants, “variety of sexual activities” was the top determining factor in how satisfied women are during sex. However, the results showed that the No. 1 thing men need to change to enjoy sex more is how they think about it.

Based on the results of the study, “concentration during sexual activity” was the top factor in how satisfying men find intimate experiences. The researchers elaborated on this finding, explaining that “letting go” and focusing on the experience is the key to better sex for men. As a result, avoiding distractions or feeling anxious about performance vastly improves the experience.

The Method Used by the Researchers

According to the researchers behind the study, they obtained information from a group of 424 volunteers with active sex lives, 205 of whom were men. The study group consisted entirely of university students aged 18 to 25. Each chosen participant answered a series of questions about what leads to their own sexual satisfaction and that of their partners. The researchers then analyzed the data and drew conclusions on the keys to sexual satisfaction, broken down by gender.

How Men Can Put the Study’s Findings Into Practice

Feeling anxious before or during sex can quickly become a vicious circle, as performance anxiety creates stress that hinders performance. However, experts note that there are methods to short-circuit that horrible cycle.

In March 2023, Psychology Today published an article about “spectatoring,” which it defined this way. “Spectatoring is a form of self-observation or self-monitoring individuals engage in during their sexual activity with another person. Spectatoring is often linked to anxiety and thoughts distracting from the erotic experience, leading to decreased enjoyment.” Fortunately, the outlet provided tips on how to avoid that practice, which the recent study showed is most detrimental to a man’s sexual satisfaction.

The outlet provided four tips on how to better let go during sex. Avoid distractions by doing things like putting phones on silent and removing pets. Whenever possible, choose to have sex at times when you don’t need to rush the experience. If you begin to have intrusive thoughts, accept them and let them go instead of pressuring yourself to never be distracted. If you are struggling to concentrate on the experience in a positive way, try to practice deep breathing to calm your nervous system and make you feel more relaxed.

In addition to providing those techniques, Psychology Today’s article also pointed out that the ideal way to let go of anxiety and distraction during sex is to have fun.
