‘Office Space’ Star Richard Riehle Dies at 78

The actor responsible for one of the most memorable roles in 1999’s Office Space has died after a distinguished career in film and television.

Richard Riehle, who played cynical product manager Tom Smykowski in the comedy classic, has died at the age of 78.

According to TMZ, Riehle’s friends say that he died from natural causes in Los Angeles last week.

In addition to his role in Office Space, Riehle was also known for playing Santa Claus in several projects on the big and small screen.

In the 1999 classic comedy, Riehle’s character Tom Smykowski works at Initech before being laid-off. After surviving a hit-and-run accident later in the film, he receives a massive cash settlement for his injuries.

He uses the money to create a prototype of his “Jump to Conclusions” mat, an invention he’s obsessed with despite the advice of his former coworkers.

Remembering Richard Riehle

Smykowski is often mentioned as a fan favorite from the film, a character emblematic of writer and director Mike Judge’s sense of humor.

Riehle’s career began as a regional theatre actor in the Pacific Northwest, and he landed his first film role in 1975. Riehle appeared in the 1975 John Wayne western Rooster Cogburn, two years before his first credited role in the 1977 film Joyride.

Outside of Office Space, Riehle appeared in films like Glory, Fried Green Tomatoes, Free Willy and The Fugitive. In the latter, he appears as the guard who allows Harrison Ford’s character Richard Kimble to escape police custody.

After his role in Office Space, Riehle would appear in several acclaimed comedies throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

He had roles in Wedding Crashers and Bridesmaids among other films, before his final film appearance in 2021’s Destination Marfa alongside the late Tony Todd.

Riehle also enjoyed a long career as a television actor, appearing in series like Dragnet, Murder She Wrote, Quantum Leap, L.A. Law and The Golden Girls.

He played Principal Ed Rooney in the short-lived Ferris Bueller television series, and spent five seasons as Walt Finnerty on the sitcom Grounded For Life.

Riehle’s final credited television role came on HBO’s acclaimed series Barry, where he appeared as Warden Reynolds opposite Bill Hader and Stephen Root. In total, Riehle is credited with appearances in over 400 projects during his career.
