A two-time Olympian who recently married her partner has died after a battle with Stage 4 bowel cancer at the age of 34.
Ciara Mageean, who competed in the 2016 and 2020 Games for Ireland, has died, according to an announcement on her social media account from her family.
“At 6:30 a.m. this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed,” Mageean’s family wrote on her Instagram account.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam,” the family added, a traditional Irish message meaning “‘May her soul be at the right hand of God.'”
Mageean’s Accomplishments As A Runner
Mageean was a mid-distance runner who specialized in the 1500 meter discipline. She competed in the Olympics in that race, and earned several accolades at the continental level as an athlete.
She became only the second person ever to win an individual European title for Ireland in 2024, winning gold in the women’s 1,500 meters at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. Mageean also won silver and bronze in previous European championships in 2022 and 2016 respectively.
Weeks before her death, Mageean married her longtime partner Tommy Moran, according to the BBC. On October 25, she posted photos from the celebration with their family and friends.
“I hope you didn’t think we were skipping the party,” she said at the time. “An incredible day yesterday in beautiful Darver Castle, surrounded by the most amazing people.”
How Mageean Learned of Her Diagnosis
In an interview with Ireland’s RTE, Mageean noted that Moran was who initially urged her to get checked before her diagnosis.
“I was sitting in that room with Thomas and Máire, my big sister, who came with me. My colorectal surgeon told me it was stage four. That the cancer was in my bowel and was quite significant in my bowel,” she noted, adding that she initially thought the cancer would be in an early stage due to her fitness and overall health.
“It had spread to my liver and was quite significant in my liver. And there was a small amount in my lungs.”
Mageean revealed her initial cancer diagnosis to her fans and followers in July of 2025 with an emotional Instagram post.
“It’s been a lot to take in, but I’ve already started treatment and I’m incredibly grateful to be surrounded by the love and support of my family and close friends,” she said.
“Thank you for the love and strength. I’m ready to face this with the same fight I’ve always brought to the track.”
Several Irish political leaders offered messages to Mageean and her loved ones following the news of her passing, including Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
Martin said that he was “saddened at the untimely passing” of Mageean, and that his sympathies are extended to her husband, as well as her family and friends.
Rest in peace to Ciara Mageean, and we send our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and loved ones during this difficult time.
