Paul Newman Asked to Be Cast for 1967 Classic Drama Before He Ever Read the Script

Paul Newman starred in several acclaimed films throughout his career, but Cool Hand Luke holds a special place in his filmography. Released in November 1967, the prison drama featured one of his most recognizable performances.

Adapted from Donn Pearce’s 1965 novel, Cool Hand Luke explored personal freedom, dignity and the struggle against oppressive authority.

Newman portrayed the film’s main character, Lucas “Luke” Jackson, a rebellious inmate sentenced to work on a Florida prison farm after being arrested for a relatively minor offense. He earns the respect of fellow inmates as he refuses to submit to the institution’s strict rules and challenges the guards.

Luke becomes a symbol of resistance through several daring escape attempts. The film also explores his relationships with other prisoners, including Dragline, played by George Kennedy, who initially challenges him but eventually becomes his supporter.

Newman became interested in Cool Hand Luke while the project was in development. According to Turner Classic Movies (TCM), he asked to be cast before reading the screenplay because he was drawn to Pearce’s novel. He later recalled that it was one of the few roles he had accepted based on the book alone.

“It’s one of the few roles I’ve committed myself to on the basis of the original book, without seeing a script,” the award-winning actor said. “It would have worked no matter how many mistakes were made.”

Newman’s performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, one of his nine acting nominations in his career. Kennedy, meanwhile, won Best Supporting Actor. The film also received nominations for its adapted screenplay and original score.

Paul Newman’s Classic Cool Hand Luke Ranked Among the Best Movies

Over the years, the film has maintained its reputation as one of the most acclaimed works of Newman’s career.

Rotten Tomatoes ranked Cool Hand Luke at No. 23 on its list of the 300 Best Movies of All Time. The film holds a 100% score from critics, while audiences give it a 95% score on the site. Critics praised the film’s screenplay and Newman’s acting.

“Though hampered by Stuart Rosenberg’s direction, Cool Hand Luke is held aloft by a stellar script and one of Paul Newman’s most indelible performances,” Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus stated.

TCM writer Rob Nixon also pointed to the script as one reason for the film’s lasting appeal. However, it noted that Newman’s portrayal of Luke was the main reason audiences still admire the film decades after its release.

“Ultimately, however, what makes Cool Hand Luke work is its star … Today, Luke seems more a victim of his own self-ostracism, even something of a masochist. But in Newman’s hands, he becomes an immensely appealing figure,” Nixon wrote.

Although he did not win an Oscar for Cool Hand Luke, Newman later won the Academy Award for Best Actor for The Color of Money (1986).
