R-Rated War Thriller Starring Scott Eastwood is the No. 1 Movie on Hulu

A relatively under-the-radar World War II thriller has found a new audience on Hulu.

Lucky Strike, the R-rated war movie starring Scott Eastwood, is currently the No. 1 movie on Hulu worldwide, according to FlixPatrol’s Oct. 26 streaming chart. The movie arrived on Hulu Monday, giving subscribers a new option for anyone looking for a gritty WWII thriller.

The timing is particularly notable because Lucky Strike had a limited theatrical run earlier this year before moving to digital platforms and now making its streaming debut on Hulu.

Scott Eastwood Stars in the World War II Thriller

Directed by Rod Lurie, Lucky Strike takes place during the Battle of the Bulge, the massive German offensive that began in December 1944.

Eastwood plays Capt. John Castle, an American soldier who becomes stranded behind enemy lines after his unit’s mission goes badly. With only a radio and his own resourcefulness, Castle has to find a way back to Allied territory while avoiding German forces.

The movie is inspired by true events and also stars Colin Hanks, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Lorne MacFadyen, Taylor John Smith, and Alfie Stewart. It’s also an R-rated movie, with the rating stemming from language, violence, and some grisly images.

For Eastwood, Lucky Strike marks another collaboration with Lurie. The two previously worked together on the 2019 Afghanistan war movie The Outpost.

‘Lucky Strike’ Has a Mixed Critical Reception

The movie’s sudden popularity on Hulu doesn’t necessarily mean critics were lining up to praise it.

Lucky Strike currently has a 64% Tomatometer score from 47 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 69% audience score from more than 50 verified ratings. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes it as a straightforward survival story with solid suspense, while suggesting that it doesn’t do enough to distinguish itself from other WWII movies.

TheWrap’s William Bibbiani was particularly critical of the screenplay, writing that the movie “falls apart at many key moments” because of narrative flaws. Still, his review wasn’t entirely negative.

Bibbiani praised Eastwood’s performance, describing him as having the presence to carry the movie and calling Lucky Strike a capable World War II action thriller when it focuses on pushing its protagonist from one dangerous situation to another.

That seems to be where much of the movie’s appeal lies. Even reviews that found problems with the story tended to acknowledge that the film delivers the kind of survival and combat sequences that fans of old-school war movies may enjoy.

‘Lucky Strike’ Is Now Finding Its Audience on Hulu

Lucky Strike isn’t the kind of blockbuster that dominated the box office when it arrived in theaters. Rotten Tomatoes lists its U.S. box-office gross at roughly $1.5 million following its limited theatrical release.

Its arrival on Hulu is giving the movie a much bigger potential audience.

And for viewers who enjoy old-school war thrillers, the movie has plenty of familiar ingredients: a soldier trapped behind enemy lines, Nazi forces closing in, a race to get home, and a lone protagonist forced to improvise his way through one dangerous situation after another.

Whether Lucky Strike ultimately becomes a new favorite or simply a movie Hulu subscribers discover while scrolling through the service, its No. 1 position gives the 2026 war thriller a second life that it didn’t quite get during its theatrical run.
