Report: Former WWE Champion May Retire in 2027

A longtime WWE superstar and three-time world champion may reportedly call it a career next year.

Since 2025, four WWE icons have called it quits: Goldberg, John Cena, Brock Lesnar and AJ Styles. In AEW, Adam Copeland (known as Edge in WWE) announced that he’ll hang up the wrestling boots at some point in 2027.

According to a report from WrestleVotes On Fightful Select, there have been internal WWE conversations about Rey Mysterio potentially retiring in 2027. The report noted that WWE has also discussed options about a possible retirement tour.

Rey Mysterio, who turns 52 on Dec. 11, has served as the on-screen GM of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide for five months. He also still wrestles regularly on Raw, where his son Dominik is also a roster member.

If he plans to retire in 2027, Rey Mysterio will presumably announce it well in advance, like Cena and Copeland.

Mysterio’s WWE resume speaks for itself. He’s already a member of the WWE Hall of Fame, having earned the induction in 2023.

In WWE, Rey Mysterio is a three-time world champion (one WWE Championship, two World Heavyweight Championships) and a member of the Grand Slam club. He won the 2006 Royal Rumble and won WWE tag team championships with five different superstars, including a reign with Dominik.
