Sam Raimi Spinoff Becomes No. 1 Streaming Hit After Just 2 Weeks

Just two weeks after arriving on HBO Max, Evil Dead Burn has already climbed to the top of the streamer’s weekly charts.

According to FlixPatrol, the most recent sequel in Sam Raimi‘s critically acclaimed Evil Dead franchise has become an overnight success following its addition to HBO Max. The movie was added to the platform in several territories across the world, which has helped it climb to No. 1 on the global weekly chart. In the United States, however, it still faces tough competition.

While Evil Dead Burn dominates in the rest of the world, it currently sits at No. 6 on the United States charts. Here, it’s The Death of Robin Hood that’s occupying the No. 1 spot after being added to the platform just three days ago.

Evil Dead Burn is the sixth movie in the Evil Dead franchise overall, and the third movie in the newly rebooted franchise. It follows in the footsteps of Fede Alvarez’s 2013 movie Evil Dead and its sequel, Evil Dead Rise, which in turn are continuations of Sam Raimi’s classic ’80s movies.

The latest sequel stars Souheila Yacoub in the lead role as Alice, a young woman who moves in with her late husband’s family after his death. But when she arrives, Alice accidentally uncovers a deep-buried secret that unleashes an ancient evil upon the family.

For fans of the Evil Dead franchise, Sébastien Vaniček‘s latest outing will be very familiar. It follows a similar structure to the rest of the movies, with a close-knit group of characters unleashing the Book of the Dead and fighting for survival as the spirits gradually pick them off one by one. It’s nothing new for the franchise, but Vaniček still manages to execute this familiar bloodbath in an exciting, dynamic way.

Evil Dead Burn received generally positive reviews from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes giving the film a score of 70% and writing: “Sébastien Vanicek spills guts with glory in this latest installment of Evil Dead, featuring the meanest, nastiest, and ickiest chapter that is sure to leave fans with a wickedly satisfying Burn for more.”

Alongside its critical success, Evil Dead Burn also thrived at the box office. The film pulled in $72 million worldwide against a reported budget of just $20 million, turning a clear profit for the studio. It was added to HBO Max on Sunday, October 4, and remains available to view with a valid subscription.
