Recently, France has been the sight of protests and political violence, and the U.S. Department of State has issued an updated warning for any Americans planning on visiting the country.
The State Department keeps a regularly updated log of travel advisories for all foreign countries, with warning levels ranging from Level 1 –“Exercise normal precautions”–to Level 4–“Do Not Travel.”
“A Travel Advisory is a report from the U.S. Department of State that describes the risks and recommended precautions for U.S. citizens—not foreign nationals—in a foreign destination,” says the State Department website. “The Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad. Information contained in these advisories reflects an assessment of threats only insofar as they may impact U.S. citizens, nationals, and legal residents.”
The travel advisory for France was updated on Wednesday amid the ongoing social unrest.
What to know
The overall warning level for France–Level 2, or “Exercise increased caution”–did not change. However, the advisory summary was updated to reflect current conditions.
“Violence and rioting have recently occurred in France and may continue,” the summary reads. “Avoid demonstrations and areas of unrest. Stay away from areas with large crowds or significant police activity.
“Pickpocketing and phone thefts are common, especially in crowded places. Terrorist groups continue to plan possible attacks in France and may attack with little to no warning. There are also regular, peaceful protests and strikes in Paris and other cities throughout France.”
In regards to pickpocketing, travelers are asked to be alert in the following spaces:
- Airports
- Subways and train cars
- Tourist attractions
- Train stations
Terrorist groups may also target places such as popular tourist locations, major transportation hubs, restaurants, major sporting and cultural events, shopping and commerce areas and more.
What to do if you’re going to France
The list of guidelines the State Department suggests include:
