The Best Travel Jeans, According to Vogue Editors

Here’s how surprisingly divisive today’s topic of conversation is: When I mentioned that I was writing about travel jeans in a recent Vogue Shopping team meeting, it spurred an impassioned response decidedly unusual for 9:30 in the morning around here. Half the room was firmly against, loyal to their elevated athleisure and silk pants with drawstring waists, a smaller contingent was staunchly pro, and one editor who shall remain unnamed voiced a defense of the travel skirt. (She may issue a rebuttal to this piece when she’s ready.) Suffice it to say, everyone has their own take on the travel outfit—but is denim at 40,000 feet ever the way to go?

Vogue’s Guide to the Best Travel Jeans

For the record, I think the answer is yes—denim is a decidedly more durable material than anything knit or silk, providing a sturdier base that can handle hours crammed in economy (no wrinkles) and that you don’t have to be too precious with if anything spills. The thicker material is also warmer, and if you’re traveling with only a carry-on, it makes sense to wear your bulkiest piece on the plane to free up luggage space.

Functionality aside, there are other reasons to consider airplane jeans. “In the photo captured above, I was traveling for work and my flight was massively delayed, resulting in a suitcase that didn’t make it on the plane,” points out Vogue Shopping fashion market director Maddy Fass. “I had to go straight to a meeting from the airport and was thankful the only clothes I had were ones I was comfortable wearing beyond the terminal.” Personally, I’m not an athleisure person even when on solid ground, so jeans are a good compromise into more casual terrain; they’re not so dressed down that I can’t make a pit stop for lunch at some nice little restaurant before heading to my hotel.

The key is picking the right rise and the right fit. Do your organs a favor and eschew anything too constricting—this is not the place for anything high-waisted or, perish the thought, a skinny jean. Instead, choose something with a low- or mid-rise in a baggier silhouette that’s comfortable enough to curl up in. I polled the team for a list of tried-and-true favorites, ahead; plus, more options from brands we love to try next.

Best Straight-Leg Travel Jeans

“I try to avoid any signs of athleisure whenever possible,” says Vogue Shopping’s market editor, Minty Mellon. “Of course, a workout or an afternoon on the sofa is a different story… but I still can’t get behind sweatpants on a plane.” Her go-to pair is from Mother, a straight-leg style called the Reifler that she’s worn in to perfection. “It sits just above the hip, and is just as comfortable as loungewear. Plus, wearing them on the plane saves precious room in my carry-on.” The silhouette has a tiny kick at the hem, making it a good option for pairing with shorter boots.
