As ever, the next Met Gala will celebrate the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring exhibition. The theme this time? “extraORDINARY: fashion and the poetics of the everyday,” examining extraordinary transformations of ordinary garments and materials.
Here’s everything else you need to know about the 2027 Met Gala.
When is the Met Gala 2027?
The Met Gala, which provides the Costume Institute’s primary source of funding for all activities, will take place on the first Monday in May: May 3, 2027. The exhibition, which opens to the public on May 9, will be on view through January 9, 2028
What is the Met Gala 2027 theme?
Organized by Andrew Bolton, with assistance from Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben, “extraORDINARY: fashion and the poetics of the everyday” will approach its subject in two ways: both by looking at how designers have elevated and experimented with simple garments like tees and jeans, and by considering how humble materials like paper, plastic, and metal have been transformed by fashion. “extraORDINARY: fashion and the poetics of the everyday” will be sponsored by Instagram, with major funding from Moncler, and additional support from Condé Nast and Jordan Roth.
The exhibition replaces the John Galliano study originally planned for 2027.
What was the last Met Gala theme?
Inaugurating the Met’s new, nearly 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries, the spring 2026 show, “Costume Art,” considers depictions of the dressed body from across the Met’s curatorial departments, pairing garments with art objects spanning some 5,000 years.
Objects in “Costume Art” are divided into a “series of thematic body types,” ranging from the “Naked Body” and the “Classical Body”—both of which are well represented within the museum’s collection—to those, like the “Pregnant Body” and the “Aging Body,” that have more often been overlooked. It remains on view at the Met through January 10, 2027.
Who hosted the 2026 Met Gala?
Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour co-chaired the 2026 Met Gala.
Continuing a tradition from years past, the 2026 Met Gala also had a host committee. That group included committee co-chairs Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz, along with members Adut Akech, Angela Bassett, Sinéad Burke, Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Misty Copeland, Alex Consani, Elizabeth Debicki, Lena Dunham, Paloma Elsesser, Rebecca Hall, LISA, Chloe Malle, Aimee Mullins, Amy Sherald, Tschabalala Self, Sam Smith, Teyana Taylor, Anna Weyant, Lauren Wasser, A’ja Wilson, Chase Sui Wonders, and Yseult.
