As the Blue Wave Sweeps the Midterm Elections, CNN Projects Democrats to Take Control of House of Representatives

The long-predicted blue wave hit shores Tuesday, as results from the 2026 midterm elections suggest that the Republican Party’s narrow 218-214 seat advantage in the House of Representatives has given way to Democratic control. With the win of Democrat Annie Andrews in South Carolina, CNN has projected that Democrats will capture the House of Representatives.

“The face of American politics just changed,” CNN’s Stephen Collinson said Tuesday. “MAGA’s monopoly on Washington will end. Trump will face relentless multi-front investigations from Democratic House committees.”

As of publication time, the fate of the Senate is less clear: Democrats need to flip at least four seats held by Republicans to win control of that body, which recent polling indicates is within reach. But with polls still open in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, and Texas, a final answer remains out of reach.
