Next BMW X5 M Spied Looking Aggressive, Even In Electric Form

The performance SUV from Germany is wearing a redesigned bodykit compared to the regular X5/iX5

BMW is cooking up its new contestant in the hot SUV segment, and our spy photographers have recently caught a camouflaged prototype during development testing just outside the Nürburgring in Germany. We’re talking about the next generation of the BMW X5 M, which is expected to enter production in 2028.

Unlike its predecessor, the new X5 M will be reportedly available in both V8-powered and fully electric forms, serving as the flagship trim of the X5 and iX5 lineups respectively. The zero-emission variant will rival the likes of the new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, the Porsche Cayenne Electric, the Lotus Eletre, and the upcoming Audi RS Q6.

The bodywork of the latest prototype is entirely covered in camouflage, but we can still see it looks angrier and sportier compared to non-M versions of the G65 X5 – even the M60e xDrive. This is down to chassis modifications, new wheels and a redesigned bodykit.

More aggressive stance, improved performance

The M treatment includes deeper front and rear bumpers, along with black trim on the profile and a double rear spoiler. However, the highlight is the wider kidney grille, which is paired to a more sculpted hood featuring integrated vents.

The prototype appears to be fitted with provisional headlights and taillights, suggesting that the production version might have unique LED graphics compared to the rest of the X5/iX5 lineup. The black five-spoke alloys might look cool, but they are also going to be replaced by new wheels featuring a more intricate design.

The interior will inherit all of the technology and practicality from the standard G65 X5, albeit with added sportiness from the BMW M division. Expect a new pair of bucket seats with heavier bolsters, carbon fiber details, new graphics for the digital cockpit, fresh options for the upholstery, and plenty of M badges around the cabin.

Performance and chassis upgrades

The heavyweight performance SUV is fitted with beefier brakes featuring drilled discs and six-piston calipers. These will be combined with a sharper setup for the adaptive suspension and the steering wheel, further improving the driver-centric character of the X5 M.

While BMW has yet to release any information about the next iteration of the model, the electric variant will reportedly generate around 900 hp (671 kW / 912 PS) from a quad-motor setup. That would create a safe distance from the electric X5 i60 which is good for 570 hp (578 PS / 425 kW).

Note that the outgoing X5 M and X6 M are fitted with a mild-hybrid twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, generating 617 hp (460 kW / 625 PS). Naturally, their V8-powered successor will be even more potent although we don’t known whether it will be able to match the performance of the EV.

We expect to learn more about the Bavarian SUV as we move closer to its debut. Hopefully, the next prototype will wear less camo, giving us a better idea of its design.
