The Most Popular Non-Existent Brand

The future isn’t always as bright as we want it to be. Sometimes, designers attempt to make something look futuristic, but somehow botch the whole thing. Such is the case with the KN car logo, which isn’t really a “K” and an “N” but it’s supposed to be Kia. If this has you confused, you’re not alone.

When Kia changed its logo on its vehicles, they went for a more futuristic approach, but somewhere along the way someone should have stopped the design and rethought it. When new models arrived in 2021 with the redesigned logo, many car shoppers began searching for the KN car brand, only to find there wasn’t any such name.

This logo redesign has become well-known as Kia and is more acceptable now than it was five years ago. Of course, if you actually look at the logo, you’ll quickly realize the area where the “I” and “A” are blended together doesn’t make a regular “N” but a backward version. This means there isn’t any such thing as a KN car, but that didn’t stop car shoppers from searching for the new KN car brand.

Understanding The KN Car Brand

Five years after the introduction of a new Kia logo, and the internet is abuzz with searches for the KN car brand. No such brand exists, but that doesn’t stop those who don’t know about Kia’s logo redesign from searching for the brand to learn more about these new vehicles. Some shoppers might look at the backward “N” and wonder why it’s shaped that way, but they still accept that the KN car logo is meant to be a new brand of vehicle, when it isn’t.

Anything that’s used for vehicles goes through a series of tests, reviews, and presentations. This means the leadership team at Kia had their blinders on, and although this new, futuristic design, was a great idea. Pushing the last two letters together and removing part of the “A” has caused nothing but confusion for car shoppers. You might think that somewhere in the mix at least one person would have stopped this new logo and pushed the designers to rethink it.

Can Kia Capitalize On The Confusion?

This redesigned car logo could have residual benefits for Kia. Although the KN car brand doesn’t exist, Kia could easily have redirects and information available to anyone searching online for this brand. It could be fun and offer a bit of humor with a self-deprecating approach. This could bring more eyes to the Kia vehicle lineup, which is filled with award-winning models that continue to make driving better for many owners.

Like many automakers, the Kia brand didn’t begin in the automotive world, but with bicycles. Thus, the original Kia logo had nothing to do with cars or SUVs but featured three diamonds overlapped by a circular gear. Inside the gear was a hexagon that housed the word Kia spelled out in capital letters. From this original logo, Kia has gone to a logo that calls for searches for the KN car brand.

Much like the KN car logo, 1964 through 1986 featured a Kia logo that was misunderstood. The so-called “Q” logo wasn’t a “Q” at all. Instead, it was a circle with a diagonal line protruding from the top right corner, which made it look a little like an upside-down letter “Q.” From 1986 to 1994, the Kia logo became more stylized. The “K” had a thick black line and a sloping triangle down and to the right. The “I” and “A” were made of single thick lines wrapped into each letter shape. Above the logo was a flying cloth banner, completing the styling.

1994 through 2012 is probably the Kia logo you’re most familiar with. It featured a red oval with the word Kia spelled out on it. The red color represents Kia’s passion and energy and the white background is for passion and purity. This logo is pretty close to what we saw before the KN car confusion. The previous Kia logo was only slightly refined and redesigned from 212 to 2021, with brighter red coloring and bolder, sharper lines. This meant very little changed from 1994 until 2021, when the KN car logo appeared.

Except for the “Q” logo, the current KN car logo is the only time Kia has offered anything confusing about its brand logo. Had the internet existed during the “Q” logo days, there might have been the same search issues as today with this new KN car brand confusion.

The Kia brand is well-known for its impressive lineup of vehicles that have gotten better and more enjoyable over the years. Anyone who can remember when Kia first arrived in North America might remember some of the early models and the bargain-basement feeling they provided. Today’s Kia lineup is filled with award-winning vehicles that make driving more of a pleasure than ever before. Models include the Telluride, Carnival, EV6, EV9, Niro, Sorento, K4, and more.

Although your search for a KN car and the brand associated with this confusing Kia logo will produce results, there’s no such thing as the KN car brand. Maybe next time Kia will avoid something as confusing as the KN car logo, but the attention it brings to the brand might be worth another confusing look the next time this brand changes its logo.

Nowadays, folks are more familiar with the logo change, and Kia, as well as Hyundai (its parent company), is having a solid year sales-wise, which proves customers may actually like the new, sharp logo that once confused them. The Korean manufacturer has enjoyed multiple record-breaking months in 2026, including September, where the brand reported an 18 percent year-over-year and an eight percent year-to-date increase – its best September in brand history. This surge is led by its SUVs, like the Telluride and Sportage, though sedans are doing well, and Kia is enjoying healthy growth among the K4 and K5. Suffice it to say, the confusion behind the KN mix-up hasn’t slowed the brand’s popularity.
