Ram 2500 Recall: Stability Control Fault Explained

Ram is recalling 8,329 model-year 2026 Ram 2500 pickups over a defect that can disable electronic stability control (ESC) without warning. FCA US, Stellantis’s domestic arm, confirmed the affected trucks were built between September 13 and November 15, 2025. Only an estimated 0.1% actually have the defect, but every truck in that production window is subject to the recall.

The issue involves the steering column control module (SCCM), which can fail internally and disable ESC. For heavy-duty trucks regularly towing trailers or carrying substantial loads, losing a system designed to prevent skids and loss of control poses a serious safety risk.

What The Stability Control Fault Actually Does

Electronic stability control uses wheel-speed sensors and individual brake applications to correct a developing skid. On a heavy-duty pickup towing a trailer, ESC can also help manage instability before it develops into a dangerous loss of control. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 126 mandates ESC on covered vehicles because its failure increases crash risk.

A faulty SCCM can disable ESC without driver input or warning. FCA has reported no crashes or injuries linked to the defect, and only a small percentage of recalled trucks are believed to be affected. However, the potential consequences for trucks carrying heavy loads or towing trailers make the issue significant enough to require a recall.

The recall covers 2026 Ram 2500 pickups built between September 13 and November 15, 2025. Trucks outside that production window or already repaired under a related campaign are excluded. The recall expands an earlier campaign, NHTSA number 26V244, and carries the new designation 26V651, with FCA using internal recall number 90D.

Owners can check their truck’s eligibility by entering its VIN at NHTSA.gov. The campaign became searchable on October 13, 2026, while notification letters are scheduled to begin mailing on November 24. Owners of potentially affected trucks should check their VIN rather than wait for the official notice.

Dealers will replace the faulty steering column control module with a corrected unit free of charge. FCA hasn’t provided a labor-time estimate, but the repair requires replacing the module rather than simply updating software.

Owners can contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall number 90D to confirm eligibility or ask about repairs. Given the risks associated with losing stability control while towing or hauling, affected owners should arrange service as soon as their VIN confirms inclusion rather than waiting for the November notification.
