“Clayface” Takes $43 Million In Global Debut

Warner Bros. Pictures

DC Studios’ “Clayface” pulled in $43 million in its worldwide debut this weekend, essentially matching its $44 million production budget.

The title, which received a rare A- CinemaScore for a horror film (only other recent ones were “Weapons,” “Get Out” and “Obsession”), came in at #1 domestically with $24.5 million.

While the box-office numbers are similar to what “Other Mommy” did the other week, and has even drawn comparisons to Sony’s ill-fated “Morbius” movie, the public reception has been far better and with Halloween next weekend it’s expected this should have a solid second weekend run.

In the U.S., the doco “You Can See Everything” took the second spot with $19.5 million – stellar word of mouth pushing it up by 25% on its opening weekend and with a total of $45.1 million so far – incredible numbers for a documentary. A24 is staggering its global rollout so no international numbers yet.

In third place domestically was LAIKA’s “Wildwood,” the highly acclaimed stop-motion film pulled in $11.3 million domestically and a further $3 million overseas

The second weekend of “Street Fighter” took fourth place domestically with $8.6 million (down 72%) and second place globally with $16.8 million. Worldwide it now sits at a total of $76.3 million.

“Wicker” debuted in fifth place domestically with $5.75 milion which is about on par with star Olivia Colman’s other recent works like “The Roses” at $6.2 million. Word of mouth is excellent.

Last week openers “Sense and Sensibility” and “Whalefall” saw drops of 53% and 59% respectively to $3.4 million and $3.2 million takes in eighth and ninth place.

In limited release, Netflix’s awards contender “La Bola Negra” continues to do well with a second weekend per screen average of $27,200 and overall $245,000 haul from nine screens.

It’s healthier than the debuts of Taika Waititi’s “Klara and the Sun” at $725,000 and “A Talent for Murder” at $717,800 total hauls from a little over 800 screens each.
