What Are You Playing This Weekend? (24th October)

Jim Norman, Features Editor

I’ve made some good Elden Ring progress this week. Not enough to see the end in sight this weekend, naturally, but I’m moving in the right direction, nonetheless.

I’ll be seeing loads of family this weekend, so I think it’s only fair that I bust out Switch Sports Resort and show them all what they’ve been missing since the Wii days. It’d also be nice to try out some Peak, too — maybe I’ll see if I can convince some cousins to get involved…

No doubt having been at MCM London on Friday, I’ll be diving back into the backlog once more. I’ve been living in Final Fantasy Resonance recently, so I’ll no doubt be riding around on my Chocobo and levelling up my party to no end. PEAK also came to the Switch 2 at last, so I’m hoping to get some friends to join me for a climb and some chaos. See you at the peak, scouts!

To no one’s surprise, I am still high-flying in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve as I gather up the final planes from the aircraft tree while hunting down hidden named aces in the campaign. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is quite a special package. It brought me back to two decades ago when I was playing Wii Sports and life was simpler. I remain an absolute menace at bowling, so online opponents beware. Happy to have Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves on Switch 2 at long last, but I’m skipping it for the physical edition early next year.

My game of the Week would naturally be assumed to be the amazing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. I can’t wait to see what happens to Captain Price and crew on this one. However, one small Canadian-developed hockey game that landed on the eShop yesterday stole the show! Game of the Week is Tape to Tape, the greatest hockey game since NHL Hitz. I fear it will be buried among the atrocious amounts of AI slop on the eShop instead of finding the intended target audience. If you grew up playing Ice Hockey and Blades of Steel on NES with friends or miss the NHL series on Mega Drive, dive stick first into this like you’re chasing a runaway puck speeding towards an unattended goal line. The greatest hockey game ever to be released on Switch.

Stopping playing Call of Duty will be the goal this weekend. As a veteran of the original Modern Warfare on 360, it’s been such a pleasure catching up with the series again, but DMZ has massive time-sink, ‘oh just one more drop’ potential and there’s lots more to be getting on with.

Elsewhere, in an effort to catch-up before GOTY, I’ve got Mouse: P.I. For Hire downloaded. And following our Ocarina playthrough in the summer, I’m playing through Banjo with the kids. We’ve dipped in for Christmastime visits to Freezeezy Peak before, but never gone through the whole thing from start to finish. My daughter is noting down all of Brentilda’s Grunty facts as we go, and we’re having a marvellous time. Bubblegloop Swamp next, I think. Have a good one, folks!

I can’t quite believe I’m saying this, but I’m pumped to play some Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 this weekend. I used to adore the CoD campaigns, but I fell off somewhere around Advanced Warfare, maybe. Since then, increasingly lukewarm critical response has put me off, but seeing the reviews for MW4 has got me genuinely excited to dive back in. Oorah!

I’d also like to download the free (for now!) upgrade pack for Hitman Absolution and see how it holds up on Switch 2. It’s a good game – not the best, of course – but good.

Those are our plans, but what about yours? Let us know what you’ll be slapping in your Switch (2) in the poll below.
