Dave Bautista Borrowed Money for His Daughters’ Christmas Gifts Before His 2002 WWE Debut, Then Became a World Champion and Marvel Star

Dave Bautista once borrowed money to buy Christmas gifts for his two daughters.

Years before his WWE debut, that painful moment pushed him to rethink his future. Later, wrestling titles and Marvel movies would turn the nightclub bouncer into a familiar face.

Looking back in a 2023 GQ interview, Bautista placed that Christmas in the late 1990s. He said, “I had to go to a guy I worked for at a club and ask him if I could borrow money.”

How did Dave Bautista turn to wrestling?

At first, Bautista tried out for World Championship Wrestling, hoping his weightlifting background would help him earn a contract. Instead, the tryout ended with rejection and a warning that he would never become a professional wrestler.

Still, he kept pursuing the sport and secured a WWE developmental contract in 2000.

Meanwhile, training required another financial risk before he could earn a steady living in the ring. Muscle & Fitness reported that he borrowed money to attend the Wild Samoan Pro Wrestling Training Center. There, he learned wrestling moves and how to build a character audiences could follow.

Finally, Bautista reached WWE television on May 9, 2002, as Deacon Batista alongside Reverend D-Von. After joining Evolution, he won the 2005 Royal Rumble and challenged his former mentor, Triple H. On April 3, he captured his first World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 21.

How did Batista become Marvel’s Drax?

Beyond that first victory, Bautista collected six world championships across two WWE titles. His record includes four World Heavyweight Championship reigns and two WWE Championship reigns.

Then, Hollywood offered a different kind of breakthrough through Drax in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Deadline notes that he returned for sequels in 2017 and 2023.

Meanwhile, his acting work expanded beyond Marvel into Spectre, Blade Runner 2049 and Dune. Those roles helped build a second career after wrestling.
