Horror Franchise Reboot 25 Years in the Making Is Paramount+’s No. 1 Movie Worldwide

A quarter of a century on from Shawn and Marlon Wayans‘ last Scary Movie project, the brothers and filmmakers are enjoying new success with Scary Movie (2026) — this time on streaming.

The new film, sometimes referred to as Scary Movie 6, was released in theaters back in June, and marked the Wayans first involvement as co-writers of the horror parody franchise since Scary Movie 2 (2001).

Scary Movie, a soft reboot that follows the events of the first two Scary Movie installments, sees Anna Faris (Friends, Mom) and Regina Hall (One Battle After Another, Support The Girls) return to reprise their respective roles as Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks, the franchise’s iconic — but rather dim-witted — best friends.

In addition to Faris, Hall, and the Wayans, Chris Elliott (Everybody Loves Raymond, Schitt’s Creek), Dave Sheridan (Scream, Horrible Bosses), Jon Abrahams (Dead Man Walking, Meet the Parents), Cheri Oteri (Saturday Night Live, Grown Ups 2), and Lochlyn Munro (Riverdale, Peacemaker) all return to reprise their roles.

The reboot is currently number one on Paramount+’s worldwide movie charts as of today, 26 October, ahead of major films including Top Gun: Maverick, Passenger, and Scream 7. Scary Movie 6, which joined Paramount+ back in September, is enjoying extra success on streaming, in addition to its $231.9 million box office run against a $30 million budget, making the film the second highest-grossing film of the franchise. Moreover, Paramount+ offers its viewers an extended edition of Scary Movie, featuring never-before-seen jokes that didn’t make it into the theatrical edition.

The newest installment of the horror movie parody series, which was released 13 years after Scary Movie 5 (2013) lampoons recent films such as Sinners, Ma, and Weapons. “Twenty-six years after the original massacre, Cindy, Brenda, Shorty, and Ray get dragged back into the chaos by a brand-new masked killer who clearly never learned when to quit,” Paramount’s synopsis for Scary Movie 6 states.
