John Goodman Says Losing 200 Pounds Left Him Feeling ‘Cold All the Time’

As one of the most beloved actors of all time, John Goodman has earned the deep affection of generations of fans for his memorable roles. As a result, many people have followed his weight-loss journey, which included losing 200 pounds. With all of the attention being paid to his physical transformation, most have no idea that he recently divulged an unexpected side effect: he feels “cold all the time.”

John Goodman’s Unexpected Revelation About His Weight Loss

In October 2026, John Goodman co-starred with Tom Cruise in the movie Digger. While promoting the film, he became the subject of a profile in The New Yorker that looked at his life and career. One of the subjects that came up when he was interviewed by the outlet was his dramatic weight loss. Goodman discussed losing and regaining weight for years while having a drinking problem, remarking that he was “eating alcoholically” at the time.

“I’d lose sixty pounds in a summer, gain it all back. Seventy pounds, eighty pounds. And that got tiring. I took steps so I wouldn’t have to do that anymore. I was almost four hundred pounds. I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking.”

In response to those remarks from Goodman, the interviewer asked him a simple question: how did he get a handle on his bad diet and excessive drinking? The actor then revealed that he underwent surgery and that he has suffered an unfortunate side effect of his weight loss: feeling cold all the time.

“I had an operation on my stomach. But I also turned anemic and lost a layer of fat under my skin, and I’m cold all the time.”

While most people wouldn’t connect feeling cold to weight loss, what Goodman has experienced makes perfect sense based on a Cleveland Clinic article. It notes that anemia, which is a drop in red blood cells, results in people feeling cold. It also details that the loss of body fat through any means is another reason why someone can begin to feel unusually chilly all the time.
