United Just Expanded a Useful Economy Perk to 65,000 More Passengers a Day

United Airlines is making it simpler for economy passengers to get the meal they want before they board. The airline has extended its meal preorder program to eligible flights over 900 miles, giving more travelers the option to pre-select fresh food rather than waiting to see what’s available onboard.

Only on flights of more than 1,190 miles could passengers order fresh meals. United has reduced that threshold to 900 miles across North America and the Caribbean, adding 420 eligible flights per day. The airline thinks the change could help as many as 65,000 more passengers a day.

How United’s Expanded Meal Preorder Works

Among the expanded service are some high-traffic routes such as Chicago to Houston, Denver to San Francisco, and Houston to Washington, D.C. But not all United flights are eligible. Preorder options must be available, and passengers must be booked on a qualifying flight.

Travelers can browse the menu on United’s website or mobile app and place orders between five days and 24 hours before their flight. The menu changes monthly and includes fresh sandwiches, burgers, pasta, burritos, and breakfast items.

Current offerings include a pork mojo burrito, a Chicago patty melt with Chef Jeff Mauro of Mauro Provisions, a hot honey chicken and waffle sandwich, and a cinnamon apple waffle. Passengers can also preorder qualifying snack boxes and other retail items.

The biggest benefit is the ability to plan in advance. Having options for passengers to choose from before they get to the airport could come in handy for those with a particular meal in mind or who don’t want to be stuck with what’s left during the flight. The preorder window also lets travelers browse the menu before takeoff.

The move is part of United’s broader effort to enhance the economy-class experience. The airline is adding Starlink Wi-Fi, seatback entertainment on more aircraft, and seasonal food and beverage options.

The expanded program offers yet another convenience for eligible travelers on shorter routes, without requiring them to upgrade to a more expensive cabin. Just be sure your particular flight has the preorder service before designing your meal around it.
