Mitsubishi Pajero returns to Japan with 5,500 pre-orders

Mitsubishi Motors is betting a diesel, ladder-frame flagship can restore its standing at home after years without the Pajero

Pre-orders for the new Mitsubishi Pajero in Japan reached about 5,500 in four weeks, already beyond Mitsubishi Motors’ sales target for the fiscal year to March 2027. Dealers start selling the three-row SUV on 17 December 2026, leaving roughly three and a half months of that period to convert orders into deliveries.

The launch returns the nameplate to Japan, where the previous Pajero left the market in 2019. A 2.4-litre turbodiesel producing 150kW and 480Nm drives through an eight-speed automatic, returning 12.1km/L in official testing. The SUV rides on a ladder frame and uses the Super Select 4WD-II system, with seven selectable drive modes.

“We are delighted to deliver the all-new Pajero to customers in Japan who have been eagerly awaiting its arrival,” Keisuke Kishiura, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mitsubishi Motors, said. “The all-new Pajero is a flagship model that symbolizes Mitsubishi Motors and plays a vital role in driving our brand forward.

“The model has been well received in Thailand, where it is already on sale, and we are pleased to finally bring the all-new Pajero to customers in Japan as well. With this launch, we will bring the off-road capability, reassurance and joy of adventure that define Mitsubishi Motors to even more customers, as we build on this momentum to drive the continued growth of the brand.”
