The Depository Trust Company, a subsidiary of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), launched its tokenization service on October 28. The new system creates tokenized representations of securities already held in DTC custody, integrating the Canton Network and DTCC’s private Besu environment. Further network connections are planned for 2027.

Service Design and Integration

DTCC stated that the service does not issue unbacked substitutes. Instead, it generates digital representations of existing securities. Legal entitlement and the depository’s established controls remain central to the design. The system allows authorized participants to move eligible assets between traditional and tokenized environments. Potential uses include collateral mobility, capital efficiency, and access to liquidity.

The launch initially integrates the Canton Network and DTCC’s private Besu environment. These networks serve regulated workflows. The company noted that the design aims to avoid reliance on disconnected records. Institutions may be able to reuse the same underlying holding in different approved workflows. DTCC named a broad ecosystem of technology and market participants working on connectivity, including custody, trading, wallet, and application specialists.

Operational Scope and Limitations

Launching the service does not mean every asset can immediately circulate everywhere. Operational details determining the size of the change include eligible instruments, transfer restrictions, corporate actions, investor protections, and cash settlement availability. Title, custody, investor eligibility, and redemption remain governed by legal agreements and regulated entities. DTCC has presented a staged, interoperable model. The model does not promise that market hours or regulatory requirements have disappeared.

Tokenization may expand blockchain activity without immediately translating into buying pressure for a particular cryptocurrency. Canton and a private Besu deployment serve regulated workflows, distinct from public token speculation. Dependable post-trade plumbing could create demand for adjacent services such as onchain cash, identity checks, and compliant collateral management. Institutional access, integrations, and real usage can rise at different speeds.
