1985 Spielberg-Produced Adventure Classic ‘The Goonies’ Is Now One of Tubi’s Most-Watched Movies 41 Years Later

Streaming has had a seismic effect on the entertainment, for better and for worse. One of the undisputed benefits is the increased accessibility of great movies, especially older, classic films that can be enjoyed by new generations with the click of a button. A perfect example of how a movie can find new life on the digital front is the revitalization of the 1985 adventure classic, The Goonies.

With future superstars like Josh Brolin and Sean Astin, and popular child actors like Corey Feldman and Ke Huy Quan, The Goonies is a tale of treasure hunting and adventure, as a gang of misfit kids team together to find pirate treasure to save their hometown. Directed by Richard Donner of Lethal Weapon fame, the film had some serious firepower behind the scenes, with Home Alone director Chris Columbus writing the script, based on a story by Steven Spielberg.

The Goonies Has A Strong Cult Following That Still Thrives Today

The Goonies was a hit at the box office and received good reviews from critics, earning a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critical Consensus says the movie will “appeal to kids and nostalgic adults alike”. That’s certainly true as the film has maintained a strong cult following that goes well beyond the original crop of kids who watched the film with wide eyes in the mid 80s. Thousands have attended anniversary events, and reunions with the cast raised over $100,000 for charity.

On the free streaming service Tubi, The Goonies has made a comeback. The film features on the service’s Most Popular page, and FlixPatrol reports that The Goonies is the 2nd most-watched film on the entire platform, behind only 1999’s The Green Mile, and hasn’t dipped out of the top 5 all week. Given that Tubi is the only place to currently stream the movie, it seems that Goonies fever is just as strong as it was over 40 years ago.
