Harry Styles took the stage at Madison Square Garden on Friday night for another show in his Together, Together residency in New York City, which happened to fall on the second anniversary of Liam Payne’s death. Before one song, the former One Direction star paused to pay tribute to his late bandmate.
Styles then debuted a new, unreleased song that he wrote for Payne after his death, titled “What Is Enough.”
‘What Is Enough’
Before performing the song, Styles spoke to the crowd about the people in his life who helped get him to where he is today.
“There are people in life – friends and people who I have worked with – that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without,” he said. “Two years ago today, I lost one of those friends. I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t.”

“I’m going to play you a song that I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s alright,” Harry said. “This is ‘What is Enough.'”
The tribute came during Styles’ 30-show run at Madison Square Garden, part of his Together, Together world tour in support of his latest album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.
Liam Payne’s Death
Payne died on Oct. 16, 2024, after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was 31 years old.
Argentinian prosecutors later said that Payne had been incapacitated by the “consumption of various substances” before his fall.
In February 2025, an Argentine court cleared three of the five people accused of playing a role in his death, while a hotel worker and a waiter accused of supplying him with cocaine remained in pretrial detention.
Styles, along with bandmates Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, attended Payne’s funeral in England the following month.
Styles Was ‘Truly Devastated’
Styles first addressed Payne’s death in a statement on social media the day after, shortly after One Direction released a joint statement saying the group was “completely devastated.”
“I am truly devastated by Liam’s passing. His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it,” Styles wrote on social media. “Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve; he had an energy for life that was infectious. I will miss him always, my lovely friend.”
Styles opened up about the loss in more detail earlier this year during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe while promoting his new album.
“I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled,” Styles said, via NBC News. “I have such strong feelings around my friend passing away.”
“It’s so difficult to lose a friend. It’s difficult to lose any friend, but it’s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways,” he added. “It’s like, I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great.”
Styles also said that Payne’s death made him take a hard look at how he wanted to live his life.
“And I think the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest,” he said.
Clearly, two years later, Payne is still very much on Styles’ mind.
