Eagles Issue New Jalen Hurts Injury Update Statement: What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Just last week, the Philadelphia Eagles issued a statement revealing star quarterback Jalen Hurts visited the training room after practice on Oct. 8, requesting treatment for his calf. He went on to practice in full and played in a Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, despite doctors finding a superficial blood clot the day before the game.

“Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter,” the team said in its statement.

However, on Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. That led the team to decide Hurts will be sidelined until the blood clot issue is resolved.

A new update reveals he’s likely done for the season.

Eagles Issue New Statement on Hurts

On Monday morning the Eagles announced Hurts has now been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli.

“He is clinically stable and has no significant limitations. His treatment should only involve anticoagulation (i.e. “blood thinners”). During this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football,” the team issued in a new statement.

What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Last week when the Eagles issued their initial statement regarding Hurts’ blood clot, the significant worry from doctors was a potential move from a superficial blood clot to deep vein thrombosis, which occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, usually in the legs, according to the Mayo Clinic.

“You can get DVT if you have certain medical conditions that affect how the blood clots. A blood clot in the legs can also develop if you don’t move for a long time. For example, you might not move a lot when traveling a long distance or when you’re on bed rest due to surgery, an illness or an accident,” the Mayo Clinic said.

While the cause of the blood clot has not been revealed, the Eagles recently made a trip overseas to face off against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London – a flight that generally takes between seven to eight hours.

Hurts’ case has taken an especially concerning twist regarding the bilateral pulmonary emboli, which is a potentially life-threatening complication associated with DVT.

“Deep vein thrombosis can be serious because blood clots in the veins can break loose. The clots can then travel through the bloodstream and get stuck in the lungs, blocking blood flow (pulmonary embolism). When DVT and pulmonary embolism occur together, it’s called venous thromboembolism (VTE),” the Mayo Clinic said.

Hurts is done for the season as he deals with a significant medical issue. In his absence, Tanner McKee took over at quarterback in the team’s 25-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

McKee completed 26-of-45 passing for 215 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.
