James McAvoy’s Horror Film ‘Speak No Evil’ Finds New Life on HBO Max

James McAvoy’s Speak No Evil is getting another chance to unsettle viewers during the Halloween season.

The Blumhouse film, a remake of the 2022 Danish horror movie of the same name, originally hit theaters in 2024. Two years later, it has now climbed to No. 5 on HBO Max’s worldwide movie charts, according to FlixPatrol.

Speak No Evil follows the story of an unsuspecting American family as they’re invited to spend the weekend at the remote farmhouse of a British couple, whom they befriended on vacation. “What begins as a dream holiday soon warps into a snarled psychological nightmare,” the description reads.

McAvoy, known for Split, leads the film as Paddy, a devilish yet charismatic doctor that turns out to be a serial killer alongside his wife Ciara. “Paddy is living and presenting a version of the good life off-grid on his own time, self-sustaining back to nature, earthy, educated, erudite, sexy. He just wants to f—ing love and feel and touch and bite and talk and debate,” McAvoy previously told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a modern version of classic masculinity that isn’t metrosexual, that isn’t beta, that isn’t compromising in any way. And yet he kind of makes it almost palatable.”

Starring alongside McAvoy is Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy as Ben Dalton, Aisling Franciosi (as Ciara), and Alix West Lefler. Jason Watkins, the filmmaker behind the upcoming Clayface movie for the DCU, directed the horror flick.

According to FlixPatrol’s Oct. 19 rankings, Speak No Evil is the No. 5 movie on HBO Max worldwide, trailing only Evil Dead Burn, Contagion, Superbad, and Sundays. It boasts 83% from critics and an 83% score from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes, proving itself as an overall hit.
